Authorization Hold

The temporary reduction in a cardholder’s available balance created by an authorization, before capture.

An authorization hold is the pending amount reserved on a cardholder’s account after authorization but before the charge is captured. It reduces available balance without completing the sale.

Holds expire if not captured within a set window, which is why timing between authorization and fulfillment matters — especially for pre-orders and delayed shipments.
