Payment Facilitator (PayFac)

A company that onboards sub-merchants under its own master account and takes on their risk and compliance.

A payment facilitator (PayFac) signs merchants as sub-accounts under its own master merchant account, assuming the underlying risk and compliance obligations in exchange for faster onboarding.

PayFacs apply their own risk appetite, which frequently excludes high-risk categories. When a PayFac’s tolerance shifts, sub-merchants can be offboarded with little notice.
