Rolling Reserve

A rolling reserve withholds a fixed percentage of each settlement batch and releases it after a set period, most often six months. Once it is running, money is being released as fast as new money is withheld, so it behaves as a permanent balance rather than an ever-growing one.

That steady-state figure is calculable in advance: the percentage multiplied by the volume that falls inside the hold window. A business processing 100,000 a month at 10% on a six-month hold plateaus at roughly 60,000 held. Knowing that number before signing is the difference between a planned working-capital cost and a cash-flow surprise in month two.

The reserve also outlives the account. Disputes can arrive months after a sale, so when a merchant leaves, the acquirer holds the balance until the chargeback tail closes. Switching processors therefore means funding a new reserve while the old one is still winding down, which is the real cost of moving and the reason to negotiate terms rather than change provider casually.

Reductions are earned, not requested. After six to twelve months of clean processing with a low dispute ratio, ask for a review with the numbers in hand. Acquirers do lower reserves for merchants who have demonstrably de-risked, but almost never for merchants who simply ask early.
