Address Verification Service (AVS)

A check comparing the billing address entered at checkout with the one on file at the cardholder’s bank.

The Address Verification Service (AVS) compares the billing address a customer enters against the address the issuing bank has on file, returning a match indicator.

AVS is a simple, widely used fraud signal for card-not-present sales, most effective when combined with CVV and other checks.
