A forced reversal of a card transaction initiated by the cardholder’s bank, often after a dispute or fraud claim.
A chargeback is a forced reversal of a card payment, initiated by the cardholder through their issuing bank rather than by you. The money is pulled back out of your account, usually with a fee attached, and the decision sits with the issuer rather than with the merchant.
The process runs on a clock that favours the cardholder. The issuer raises the dispute with a reason code, your acquirer debits the funds, and you have a fixed window to respond with evidence, a step called representment. Miss the deadline and you lose by default, whatever the merits.
What makes chargebacks dangerous in high-risk categories is not the individual loss, it is the ratio. Card networks monitor disputes as a percentage of your transactions, and crossing a threshold puts you into a monitoring program with fines and remediation deadlines attached. A run of disputes can therefore cost you the account long before it meaningfully dents revenue.
Most disputes are preventable at the edges rather than won in argument. A clear billing descriptor customers recognise on a statement, responsive support before someone calls their bank, prompt refunds on genuine complaints, and delivery evidence retained for every order will remove more chargebacks than any amount of representment.
